About the Artist
Along with Denis Smith, Prosper Pierre Louis, Dieuseul Paul, and Louisianne St. Fleurant, the primitivist artist Levoy Exil is among the best-known of the Saint Soleil school of Haitian painting. He was born in Fermathe in 1944 and began painting in 1972. In his direct, spontaneous, and uninhibited style, he portrays doves, women, the sun, Voodoo spirits, and visions from his own dreams.
He lives and works in Soissons la Montagne, in the mountains high above Port-au-Prince. Among the many exhibitions to feature his work was the World Theater Festival in Nancy, France, in 1977, and "Haiti: Art Naif, Art Vaudou" at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris in 1988.
